7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary on Shira Route: Your Path to the Roof of Africa

Are you ready to embark on an adventure of a lifetime? Mount Kilimanjaro, standing majestically at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), beckons thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. As the highest peak in Africa, Kilimanjaro offers not just a physical challenge but also a journey through diverse ecosystems and breathtaking landscapes. At Siha Discovery, we specialize in crafting unforgettable experiences for our clients, and our 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary on the Shira Route promises to be a transformative adventure.

Why Choose the Shira Route?

The Shira Route is one of the lesser-traveled paths on Kilimanjaro, offering stunning views and a more tranquil experience, perfect for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature without the bustling crowds. Starting from the Shira Gate, this route takes you through lush valleys, rocky terrain, and enchanting moorlands, all while providing the ideal acclimatization schedule to help you reach the summit safely.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Tanzania. Our friendly Siha Discovery team will greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to your accommodation in Moshi. Take this time to relax, soak in the beautiful surroundings, and prepare for the journey ahead. We recommend a good night’s sleep and a hearty meal to fuel your body for the climb.

Day 2: Moshi to Shira Gate, Trek to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

After a hearty breakfast, we will drive you to the Shira Gate (approximately 2 hours from Moshi). Once we arrive, our professional guides will help you with necessary preparations, including a briefing on safety and health tips for the climb.

As you embark on your trek today, you’ll be captivated by the stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s western flank. The hike to Shira 1 Camp will take about 5-6 hours. Along the way, you’ll traverse through lush vegetation, witness the grandeur of the alpine desert, and enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes.

After a rewarding day of trekking, you’ll arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where you can unwind and marvel at the sunset over the mountain. Enjoy a delightful dinner prepared by our talented chefs, and share stories with your fellow adventurers around the campfire.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,800 m)

On day three, you will enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out for a day of exploration. Our path takes us to Shira 2 Camp, with a trek of about 3-4 hours. This shorter trek helps with acclimatization and gives you the chance to enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the region.

As you hike, don’t forget to look around; the expansive views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains remind you why you’re here. Reaching Shira 2 Camp, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the Shira Plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its unique rock formations and diverse ecosystems.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower (4,600 m) and back to Barranco Camp (3,950 m)

Today is an important day for acclimatization. We will venture to Lava Tower, an impressive rock formation at 4,600 meters. This trek will take approximately 6-7 hours. Ascending to Lava Tower allows your body to adjust to the higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters, where you will spend the night.

The contrast in elevation helps to prevent altitude sickness and strengthens your body for the summit. The descent to Barranco Camp is equally rewarding, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the daunting Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

After breakfast, prepare for a challenging yet exhilarating day. The ascent of Barranco Wall – a steep climb of about 100 meters – will test your resolve. But don’t worry; our expert guides will be by your side, providing encouragement and assistance as you navigate this thrilling section.

Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views. The hike to Karanga Camp will take about 4-5 hours. Here, you will savor a delicious dinner and rest, preparing for the final ascent to the summit.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

On day six, you will trek from Karanga to Barafu Camp, a journey of about 4-5 hours. Barafu Camp is the starting point for your final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. You’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and fuel your body with a hearty meal before the big push.

In the evening, you will receive a briefing from your guides about the upcoming summit attempt. The excitement and anticipation will fill the air as you settle into your tents for a few hours of rest before the journey to the summit begins at midnight.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

This is it – your moment of triumph! You’ll wake up around midnight, enjoy a light breakfast, and then begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak. The trek to the summit takes around 6-8 hours, depending on your pace.

As you ascend, the stars will guide you, and the cool air will invigorate your spirit. With each step, you’re closer to achieving your dream of reaching Africa’s highest point. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you’ll be overwhelmed with emotion, surrounded by stunning views of the vast African landscape. Capture this moment with photos, and take a deep breath; you did it!

After celebrating your achievement, you will begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a quick rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. This descent will take about 7-8 hours, and your legs will likely feel the strain from the long day. But don’t worry; our guides will support you every step of the way, ensuring your safety and comfort.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640 m)

After a well-deserved night’s rest, enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain. The last leg of your journey will take you from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, which takes about 3-4 hours. As you hike through lush rainforests, you’ll have a chance to reflect on your incredible journey and the friendships you’ve formed along the way.

At Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates, a testament to your perseverance and spirit. Our team will be waiting to greet you and celebrate your success! We will then transfer you back to Moshi, where you can relax and reminisce about your adventure.
